I fell in love with photography the first time I ever picked up a camera as a child. Taking pictures was a true passion from there on out. In high school I took a photography class and that’s when I knew what I wanted to do with my life; be a photographer. My parents, on the other hand, were not fond of the idea so instead I went to college for a business marketing degree. After graduating and dabbling in the business world for a few years I decided it just wasn’t what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Since I was always taking pictures of my friends and family, I got used to hearing “wow these photo’s are great! You should do this for a living!” So I took their advice, and that was the start of Sophia MacDow Photography!
I grew up in Northern California, in the town of Grass Valley in Nevada county. It’s a small town in the heart of Gold Country known for its outdoor beauty and amazing lakes and river spots. (This makes for some amazing locations we have available for portrait sessions!) One of my favorite locations for portraits here (besides the river, of course), is inside our beautiful historic state park Empire mine. It used to be a working gold mine, and now It’s definitely a gold mine for any type of photography session! Our small town and its surrounding areas (Nevada City, Penn Valley, Smartsville, Auburn, Loomis, Rocklin, Roseville) are full of amazing locations for weddings and portraits as well. There are some true hidden gems around here!
I am married to my amazing husband Chai, and together we have a beautiful son, Colton. My husband has been so supportive of my business and without him Sophia MacDow photography would not be where it is today. I am so thankful for his ongoing support, and feel incredibly lucky to have him by my side. Being able to stay home and raise our son while doing what I love is a dream come true.
